SpaceX Achieves Success

SpaceX Falcon 1Today, history was made. A privately funded company achieved a successful orbital flight of their original and independently developed two stage, liquid oxygen and rocket grade kerosene powered launch vehicle.

Why does it matter? Because for years many individuals have been saying that this wouldn’t (and couldn’t) happen, that private industry did not have the resources nor means to develop the technology necessary to rival the big budgets of governments. This provides an opportunity for an entire industry to emerge out of nothing, for an industry to come about that will provide a cheap, safe, efficient way of transporting people and cargo into orbit.

More importantly, today’s event will create competition. Other companies will spring up with better, cheaper, faster ways of performing the same feat. They’ll be able to carry more payload, transport humans, and make money. In fact, it’s highly likely that SpaceX will have to work very hard in order to stay competitive.

After speaking with a friend about this today, my friend remained skeptical. So I looked up the following figure, and will leave you with it. In 1954, Sir Roger Bannister broke what was said to be an “impossible-to-beat” world record by running 1 mile in less than 4 minutes, at 3 minutes 59.4 seconds.

That record was broken 6 weeks later.

12 Seconds – My New Blog

For reals this time, I promise…

Back in the day, I had a livejournal. I’m sure it’s still out there, and maybe after writing this I’ll go find it (in fact, I spoke with an old friend about livejournal just this evening).  In any case, the act of putting my personal thoughts out on the internet is not anything new to me – the act of doing so in a consistent and meaningful way is VERY new to me, and I have only recently begun to do so.

The mechanism with which I’ve done so has been Twitter, a fine web application that I encourage you to try out if you’re at all interested in these new-media-social-sharing activities. Just visit www.twitter.com, and you can find my profile here.

So in order to further this, I’m going to use this blog to further collect my thoughts and ramblings into one detailed place, mainly for my own personal reference. If you’d like to comment on these items, I encourage you to. If not, no pressure! Hopefully you enjoy what I have to say to the extent that you might come back at some point.

I have no intentions on what sort of content will make it up here – everything from my 12seconds videos to tweets to random thoughts I have throughout the day will most likely make an appearance, and I’ll let the blog grow as my content grows.
